the failure of martial arts

March 24, 2008

Came across this article on msnbc. It’s a genuine downer of a story, typical of American media. But that’s not what I want to address.

Right from the start of the article it states that “Meredith Emerson used her wits and martial arts training when she was attacked…” And tragically, it pains me to write this, Ms. Emerson is now dead because her wits and martial arts training failed to save her.

I am not placing the blame of her pre-mature death on her or her faulty training. Not at all. That blame falls entirely on her killer’s shoulders.

What I am saying is this: if the martial arts were an effective means of self-defense then we would not be reading about a young athletic 24 year old woman who went up against an armed 61 year old man. An old man who couldn’t even keep up with her while hiking. But that’s not the case.

And for every feel-good positive “she used martial arts to kick the knife out of his hands” article there are tragic ones as well. I wish that wasn’t true. Like how I wish the martial arts does what it’s supposed to do.

Articles like the one linked above make me mad and upset for many reasons.

Anyway, here are links to articles written by Darren Laur, addressing many self-defense issues, several of them are directly concerned with the reality of weapons and knife fighting.

Be safe out there.

Can I ask though – how did you get this picked up and into google news?

Very impressive that this blog is syndicated through Google and is it something that is just up to Google or you actively created?

Obviously this is a popular blog with great data so well done on your seo success..
